OUR IMPACT

Professional Development for artists

  • Out of the Shadows has been crucial in cultivating an ecosystem that fosters the growth and professional development of the popping community in Chicago. By bringing prominent poppers to the city each year, the event has attracted newcomers and resulted in substantial growth, leading to new opportunities for local artists to collaborate, teach, perform, and compete on national scale.

Minority representation

  • With over 70% attendees and 90% featured artists identifying as people of color, the event champions underrepresented communities and fosters an inclusive environment that transcends cultural boundaries, promoting empathy and understanding.

Addressing accessibility challenges

  • By providing a national-scale event in Chicago’s backyard, Out of the Shadows bridges gaps for local artists who may lack resources to travel to established popping hubs like Los Angeles or New York. This enables the local community to showcase their talents, network with peers, and learn from influential poppers they may not encounter otherwise.

  • Each year we provide scholarships to promising local dancers facing financial constraints, ensuring that their participation in the event and workshops is not hindered by economic barriers.

Financial compensation for artists

  • Each year our event employs more than a dozen artists, with more than 50% of our event budget going towards fair artist compensation.

STREET DANCE CULTURE EDUCATION

  • From featured workshops with renowned judges around the world to a free and open to the public after-party, dancers and spectators alike have the opportunity to immerse themselves in and learn about authentic street dance culture all weekend long.
