Introducing Sunday Funkday: Celebrating legacy and innovation within Chicago’s popping scene
We’re excited to share an important update to our weekly sessions, now renamed Sunday Funkday in honor of Electric Funkateer’s legacy. For decades, the Electric Funkateers have been a cornerstone of Chicago’s popping community, leaving a lasting impact that continues to shape the dance scene today. Founded in 1980, they played a foundational role in establishing and nurturing the art form in our region, and we are proud to carry their tradition forward. As part of this honor, we are adopting their format of monthly themes with progressive weekly curriculums, providing a more structured environment for dancers to continue developing their skills.
A special connection to this legacy is our own Sid “NSidDS” Tucky, who has been a dedicated member of the Electric Funkateers since 2014. Sid led the original Sunday Funkday sessions for several years, and his commitment to fostering talent and innovation has had a lasting impact on the Chicago community.
While we are evolving, we remain focused on accessibility and community engagement. In response to feedback from participants, we’ve shifted to a voluntary fee structure for Sunday Funkday. The sessions will now be free for everyone, with an encouraged contribution of $5 to $20. This change reflects our desire to continue making these sessions accessible, while inviting those with the means to support our community to do so as they are able.
This transition is part of a larger vision of “passing the torch” as we strive to honor the foundations laid before us while continuing to innovate and grow. Sunday Funkday represents our commitment to balancing the task of celebrating tradition and propelling the community forward. By building upon the legacy of the Electric Funkateers, we aim to inspire new generations of dancers and ensure the longevity and growth of our Chicago’s popping community.
If you’re in Chicago this year, we invite you to join us at Sunday Funkday. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or just beginning, you’ll find a welcoming community ready to grow together.
