Shadow Puppetz Receives Grant From Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events

We are thrilled to announce that Out of the Shadows, Shadow Puppetz’s annual popping dance festival, has been selected for partial funding by the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE). This exiting news marks a significant milestone for our community. As the first grant we have received, this recognition by the city underscores the impact Out of the Shadows has had since its inception in 2022.

Out of the Shadows began as a vision to cultivate an ecosystem for popping dance in Chicago by providing accessible learning opportunities, a platform for underrepresented artists in our community, and facilitate cultural exchange by bringing renowned artists from across North America. Now entering its fourth year, the festival has grown to become a major event on the street dance calendar, attracting participants from across the country and around the world. Thanks to DCASE’s support, we can enhance the festival’s programming, expand community outreach, and continue elevating the profile of Chicago’s street dance community.

“This grant is an affirmation of all the hard work we’ve put into building Out of the Shadows and fostering a space where popping dance can thrive,” says Jude “Jinx” Brummett, Executive Strategy & Operations Director of Shadow Puppetz, “We’re excited to continue growing, and with the support of the city, we’re one step closer to securing more sustainable funding for the future.”

As we move forward, we’re committed to building on this momentum by seeking additional support from individual donors, sponsors, and grants to ensure Out of the Shadows can continue to flourish in the years to come.

Stay tuned for updates on the 2025 edition of Out of the Shadows, which promises to be our biggest and most exciting festival yet!
